It is our recommendations that Kaizen Blitz only be applied to areas, processes or departments where there is a serious threat to the organisation and/or despite several requests and support efforts, they have not responded with the improvement and change required. They lag behind the rest of your organisation.
Kaizen Blitz consists of a rapid analysis of the specific area and then instigates rapid change with some involvement from stakeholders. Due to the speed (1 to 2 weeks), the change process can be very disruptive and generally takes some time to settle back down from an employee perspective. However the changes are made and the intended rapid improvement is the result. Sometimes this is needed to one get the needed results and two demonstrate that the organisation will get results if not the preferred way then by the stealth way.
Kaizen Events are less disruptive and involve the stakeholders much more during the process as the change may take from 4 weeks to 12 weeks to deliver. This approach also delivers the desired results over a longer time period
and also demonstrates that the organisation is serious about achieving results from all areas of the business. The upside is that the employees and stakeholders are much more satisfied with the outcomes due to their involvement and ownership of the journey taken to get there.
